Dwarfism and the CT Scan

When two people of average height find out that they are going to have a child, it is really a very special time in their lives. However, in order to make sure that everything is alright with the fetus, it is important that tests be done. In the cases of some couples who have a gene for dwarfism, there is some chance that their child could become a dwarf.

There are various types of dwarfism, and those who have any of these types should have a routine CT scan done in order to check on their overall health. Take, for example, those who have a rare form of dwarfism known as Primordial Dwarfism. In this case, the head is considerably smaller than the rest of the body, and with their overall stature, these people become thirty inches tall at the most.

A CT scan is extremely important for these people, because since their heads are so small, so are their brains, and the chances of them developing a clot are significant. However, when a CT scan is done, the clots can be seen before they become inoperable, thus saving the person's life.

What is a CT scan, anyway? It is a form of advanced medical technology that takes some aspects of a traditional x-ray, but enhances them so that not only the skull can be seen, but also the brain and the arteries. Those with dwarfism are not the only people who can benefit from this procedure. People with head trauma or other brain issues also are candidates.
