Preventing Osteoporosis with a Bone Density Test

Our bones are more important to us than some of us realize. Without our bones, there would be nothing to support our body frame. Our bones also act as protection for our internal organs. Just as children and young adults are encouraged to eat foods rich in calcium to keep their bones strong, so too as people get older, it is very important for them to get their bones checked.

One such way to have the amount out calcium in the bones checked is for the patient to have a bone density test. Usually, candidates for a bone density test are middle aged and older, as this is a precaution to prevent against osteoporosis. It is important for those who are unaware of what osteoporosis is to actually gain a better understanding of this medical condition to realize the importance of getting a bone density test.

Osteoporosis is a bone condition that affects millions of people around the world. It is marked by a severely low amount of calcium in the bones, which in turn makes the bones brittle and easily breakable. Although poor nutrition is one of the leading causes of osteoporosis, it is also caused by poor lifestyle choices like smoking.

A bone density test will measure the amount of calcium in the bones. If it is determined that there is too little calcium, the patient will be instructed to make diet changes, or take calcium supplements. Collectively, this will help the symptoms of osteoporosis, or prevent osteoporosis from happening at all.
