The Importance of Getting a Preventative Scan

In order to live long, fulfilling lives, it is very important that a person seek out health care as necessary. As a child, teenager, and then young adult, the person will need yearly physicals, and additional health care as necessary. Then, as a person reaches their fifties, they are increasingly at risk for other heath problems.

One of the things that a person can do in order to make sure that their health is optimal is to get a preventative scan. There are several different types of scans that a person could get. Usually, each preventative scan is based on the genetic predisposition the person has to a particular illness.

Something that many people have trouble with is high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Both of these things can result in a fatal heart attack if they are not treated. If a person starts exhibiting the signs of one or both of these health conditions, then the first step is for them to take medication to get their cholesterol and blood pressure to healthy levels.

After this has been done, the doctor might order a preventative scan to check how the arteries are doing. When a person has high cholesterol, usually things like plaque and calcified substances start to build up in the arteries. If the medication does not get these substances in time, an angioplasty might need to be done in order to clear the arteries and prevent a heart attack.

Then, of course, there is the issue of blood clots. One of the first places a scan will be performed to check for blood clots is the head, because if the blood vessel ruptures, that could also be lethal. So, for this procedure a person will need to go undergo a preventative scan known as a CT scan.

In this kind of scan, the person will be asked to lay down on an examining table, which is then pushed back into a capsule that contains the scanner. Over the period of about an hour or so, the scanner will work much like a regular x-ray machine. The only main difference is that it will be producing a three dimensional version of not only the bones, but also the veins and the arteries in the head.

It is important to note that circulatory problems are not the only conditions that a doctor might request a scan for. When a woman enters menopause, as well as after the time that she enters menopause, she ends up at risk for calcium depletion in her bones. This in turn can result in osteoporosis, in which the bones become brittle and easily break.

For this kind of a scan, the woman will be asked to lay down on a table that is placed directly under the scanner itself. It is important to note that the woman will need to be wearing clothing that is free from any metal, because that can inhibit the scan results. Next, the scanner will make a couple of passes over her body, and with each pass she should stay completely still. If it is found that her bones are lacking in calcium, she will most likely be given calcium supplements to counteract the effect.
