What to Know About an MRI Scan

The brain is an amazing thing. Without it, we would not be able to think, feel, or even live. Usually, a healthy lifestyle leads to a healthy brain. However, various problems like an accident or strokes as the result of a heart condition can put the brain in peril.

This is where an MRI scan becomes a very helpful procedure. An MRI scan is a radiology procedure in which a very detailed x-ray is taken of the head to see possible brain damage. Many people end up requiring an MRI scan for a variety of different reasons, starting with an accident.

The most prevalent of these accidents is a car accident. Say, for example, that a person ends up driving into a tree. If they were not wearing their seat belt at the time, the chances are good that their head hit the dashboard or the windshield. They might have even been knocked unconscious for a time.

This most likely, at the very least, resulted in a concussion. A concussion means a bruised brain, and if the bruise is bad enough, a clot might form. This same scenario could happen to an athlete who constantly is suffering head injuries despite wearing a helmet.

In order for the MRI scan to work, the person is going to have to stay very still for the better part of an hour in order to get the most accurate results possible. Some people have a problem staying that still, and as such are advised to bring music to listen to enable that important relaxation factor.
