Why it is Necessary to Get a Calcium Scan

As people age, their bodies start to lose the dexterity that they used to have. As children, hopefully they were taught the importance of calcium in their diet, milk being one of the most important sources. Those who followed the rules ended up with strong bones.

However, even these people are not immune to bone problems associated with age, and that is why they should get a calcium scan as soon as they turn fifty. Now, you might think that a calcium scan entails scanning bones to see the level of calcium deposit that they have. However, this assumption is untrue, because it is actually a scan to check the health of the arteries and the heart.

Unfortunately, many people end up with heart disease or are at risk for it. The most dangerous aspect of heart disease is the risk of a heart attack. Heart attacks are caused by a buildup in the arteries. Part of this buildup consists of calcium. So, a calcium scan checks the arteries for this calcium buildup, and thus can help a doctor diagnose the patient's risk of suffering a heart attack.

How can you tell if you are a good candidate for a calcium scan? First of all, you usually have to have a history of high blood pressure and high cholesterol. If you are a smoker, you are automatically at a higher risk for a heart attack. So remember: Calcium is good for your bones, but it is definitely not good for your arteries!

What to Know About an MRI Scan

The brain is an amazing thing. Without it, we would not be able to think, feel, or even live. Usually, a healthy lifestyle leads to a healthy brain. However, various problems like an accident or strokes as the result of a heart condition can put the brain in peril.

This is where an MRI scan becomes a very helpful procedure. An MRI scan is a radiology procedure in which a very detailed x-ray is taken of the head to see possible brain damage. Many people end up requiring an MRI scan for a variety of different reasons, starting with an accident.

The most prevalent of these accidents is a car accident. Say, for example, that a person ends up driving into a tree. If they were not wearing their seat belt at the time, the chances are good that their head hit the dashboard or the windshield. They might have even been knocked unconscious for a time.

This most likely, at the very least, resulted in a concussion. A concussion means a bruised brain, and if the bruise is bad enough, a clot might form. This same scenario could happen to an athlete who constantly is suffering head injuries despite wearing a helmet.

In order for the MRI scan to work, the person is going to have to stay very still for the better part of an hour in order to get the most accurate results possible. Some people have a problem staying that still, and as such are advised to bring music to listen to enable that important relaxation factor.

What is a Virtual Colonoscopy?

Technology has grown by leaps and bounds over even just the past decade. Now, thousands of people turn to the Internet to find out medical information – of which some is unreliable. Not only has the Internet grown, but also computer software has evolved to such an extent that many doctors rely on it to successfully complete various medical procedures.

Through all of this, the virtual colonoscopy has evolved as well. A virtual colonoscopy uses computer imaging software and the technology present in CT scanning to create a three-dimensional image of the colon. This procedure is preferable to many patients, because the only other alternative is inserting an endoscope into the rectum. Obviously, this is an alternative that is exceedingly invasive.

Many people try to avoid having this procedure done because of this, but it cannot be stressed enough that it is a vital aspect of maintaining health. A virtual colonoscopy is usually done on people who are at least fifty years of age. It is at this age that the odds for polyps increases dramatically. A virtual colonoscopy is a procedure that is supposed to detect those polyps so that they can be successfully treated. Additionally, this procedure is meant to detect the early signs of cancer.

How can a person prepare for this procedure? Well, in addition to wearing comfortable clothing that is free of zippers, metal buttons, etc., the patient will have to completely clear their bowels. This can be achieved through medicine that the doctor will prescribe for the patient to take the night before the procedure.

Questions Relating to a CT Scan

When people have something wrong with their body, it only makes sense that they seek medical attention for it. Sometimes the medical attention needed in the form of medication. Other times it might have to do with surgery. Whatever the situation, it is very important for the patient to ask lots of questions so that they can be fully informed.

The same rules apply if a patient has been told by their doctor that they need a CT scan. The first question that many people might ask is in regards to what the CT scan procedure entails. Specifically, it is a procedure in which computer technology and x-ray technology come together to get a create a detailed picture of the internal organs, tissue, blood vessels, and bones.

What is a CT scan most commonly used for? Usually, this scan is used by doctors to diagnose tumors. It is also used to diagnose various vascular issues, and injuries. Another question that many patients will have is in regard to how they should prepare for the CT scan in the first place.

It is actually easier than the patient might think First of all, the patient should avoid wearing tight clothing, and instead wear loose clothing. Do not wear anything that has metal in it, because the scan will pick it up. All of this being said, the doctor might require the patient to wear just a gown anyway. The length of the procedure will vary depending on the situation, and as such, it will be important for the patient to relax during the procedure.

The Importance of a Virtual Colonoscopy

When a person gets older, they become at risk for more things than they ever had been when they were younger. Simply put, the older a person gets, that means that the older the internal organs get. Varied lifestyles can often take their toll on the body, and this is where medical technology comes in.

There are various medical procedures that make a significant amount of difference because of technology, and once of these procedures is the virtual colonoscopy. Now, if you happen to be a person who is over fifty years of age, chances are that if you haven't had a regular colonoscopy, you at least know someone who has.

When it comes to discussing the technical side of this procedure, no doubt you have heard how uncomfortable it is. Luckily, the virtual colonoscopy has eliminated the more painful aspects of the original procedure. In fact, the invasive nature of the original procedure was to such an extent that people would not have the procedure done at all, thus risking their health.

Many more people would probably have the procedure done now that the virtual colonoscopy is available. In a virtual colonoscopy, the colon is scanned rather than probed. Thanks to the intensified x-rays, a three-dimensional rendering of the colon can be seen. However, in order for the procedure to be effective, the colon must first be thoroughly cleansed so that any polyps can clearly be seen. This is achieved by drinking a certain prescribed drink prior to the actual procedure.
