Is it possible to get lung problems or breathing problems from being around tarballs from a oil spill?

Five months ago I took a breathing test in June 2010 but starting working the oil spill spill clean up in October 2010 and I felt sick a month later. Then the lung doctor said I have asthma. I'm only 33 years old and haven't had asthma before.
